Hollywood Icons Jenny McCarthy & Carmen Electra Model for SKIMS

Released on Thursday July 6th, a SKIMS ad featuring the two stars from iconic show “Isolated” was published, catching the audience by pleasant surprise.

The 51 and 52 year old ex show hosts modeled matching nude bikinis, posing in a risqué photoshoot. Yet, this was just one of their many stunning looks. Soon to follow were black bikinis, stunning one pieces, and sexy sport-suits. The 90s photoshoot channeled a throwback to the past that had many readers and SKIMS fans on their toes.

All swimsuits modeled by the two are available for order now at SKIMS.com.

Your Guide to Affordable Swimwear

Ever see a swimsuit that you MUST have in your closet? Then you click on its price and its upwards of $300? Us too. The swimwear industry can oftentimes be a difficult and confusing place to navigate. With prices either extremely low, or extremely high, it can be hard to know which swimwear will best fit your needs.

PICTURED ABOVE IS A LULI FAMA BIKINI SET. ORIGINALLY PRICED AT $164, AND BEING RESOLD AT $64.

As shown above, there are lots of options when it comes to clothing resale that are quite cost and style savvy. Shopping in person at thrift stores and consignment shops also allows you to better gauge if a size will work or not, however apps such as Poshmark and Depop oftentimes accept returns as well.

A Fun and Fabulous Guide to Finding Your Perfect Swimwear

Summer's just around the corner, and it's time to hit the beach or lounge by the pool in style! But finding the perfect bikini or swimsuit can be a challenge. With so many options out there, how do you choose the right one for your unique body type? Don't sweat it—we've got you covered!

Say goodbye to wardrobe malfunctions and hello to confidence, as we dive into our fun and fabulous guide to finding the perfect swimwear that'll make you feel like a million bucks.

Hello, Hourglass!

If you're blessed with an hourglass figure, you're in luck! This body type offers the greatest versatility when it comes to swimwear styles. Just remember to maintain your natural balance in proportions. For example, if you're rocking patterns or textures, apply them to both your top and bottom pieces. Bigger bust? No problem! Choose a larger style with thicker straps and a supportive cup. And if you've got some extra booty, avoid side-tie bikini bottoms. It's all about balance, babe!

Rock that Rectangular Shape

For our rectangular beauties, focus on creating curves and strategically adding volume. High-waisted bottoms that end above the navel can help accentuate your waist, while side-tie or frilled bottoms add a little va-va-voom to your hips. And don't forget about your bust—twisted or heart-shaped strapless bra styles can give you that extra oomph! Steer clear of overly rectangular designs and choose one-piece swimsuits with a neckline or waist-tie detail to create a curvier silhouette. You'll be turning heads in no time!

Triangular Temptresses, Unite!

If your body shape is triangular, with more visual weight in the hips and thighs, it's time to put the spotlight on your upper body. Ditch those thin side-tie bottoms and go for bottoms without side ties and with a slightly thicker, more supportive band. High-waisted bottoms can work wonders, especially those with a lower cut, like a hang glider style. When it comes to tops, the world is your oyster! Experiment with textures, colors, prints, and horizontal details. Strapless, cropped, off-the-shoulder, or any style with strap details like lace or frills can make you feel like a beach goddess.

Inverted Triangle Vixens

For our inverted triangle lovelies, it's all about bringing attention to your lower body. Choose bottoms with prints, ruffles, frills, or side ties. Wider bands with eye-catching colors can also work wonders. Keep your tops discreet and always feature straps. If you're blessed with a larger bust, opt for thicker straps and some padding. One-piece swimsuits? Go for a V-shaped neckline and make sure the most eye-catching part is from the waist down.

Outstanding Oval Bodies

Oval body types, rejoice! We're here to help you find swimwear that flatters your figure by drawing attention away from the center of your body. Opt for high-waisted bikini bottoms with wider sidebands, and avoid very thin straps. For tops, choose styles with wider straps to provide support and details that draw the eye upward. For one-piece swimsuits, go for styles with necklines that create a vertical line in the belly region. You'll look and feel fabulous!

With our fun and fabulous tips, there's no way you can go wrong when choosing your ideal swimwear. But remember, the most important thing is to try on different styles and choose the one that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Sustainable Fashion: A Responsible Choice for Summer Wardrobe

The fashion industry has a reputation for being one of the world's largest polluters, with a negative impact on both the environment and society. As sustainability becomes increasingly important, consumers are demanding more ethical and eco-friendly options when it comes to their clothing choices.

With this in mind, it is essential to consider the impact of your choices when selecting your bikini or swimsuit this season.

A core value for many responsible brands, sustainability is a priority in every aspect of their production process, from materials and suppliers to factories and packaging. One of the most popular approaches is to use recycled materials, and there are several sustainable fabric options worth considering.

Econyl is a material similar to nylon, made entirely from recycled waste from the ocean and landfills, such as industrial plastic and leftover fabrics from clothing companies.

Another option is Repreve, a sustainable fiber created with 100% post-consumer food-grade plastic that is BPA-free. It is increasingly becoming the focus of sustainable swimwear.

Tencel is a sustainable fabric made from eucalyptus pulp dissolved in a non-toxic solvent. Eucalyptus is a tree that requires very little water to grow and no pesticides, making it particularly environmentally friendly. The forests are certified sustainable and have a low environmental impact.

Hemp is another natural fiber that is biodegradable and requires less water than cotton to grow. Brands like Natasha Tonic are using this material for their swimwear.

Recycled polyester, also known as PET, is another sustainable fabric option. It is obtained by melting plastic and spinning it into new polyester fiber, with post-consumer polyester obtained from the recycling of plastic bottles. The transformation of plastic bottles takes place in several steps, with the filaments/fibers extracted from the plastic processed to obtain a polyester yarn. The yarn is then woven to obtain the raw material that allows the production of garments.

As consumers, it is crucial to know the sustainable practices of companies and choose those that are committed to the environment. By consuming less and without excess, we can play our part in promoting sustainable fashion.

Sustainable fashion is a responsible choice when it comes to swimwear this summer. By considering eco-friendly materials and brands committed to sustainability, we can enjoy our summer wardrobe while minimizing the negative impact on our planet.

Have you made your sustainable bikini or swimsuit selection for this summer?

Top Trends in Swimwear 2023

Summer is a time of sea breeze, salt water, and the sun warming up the days. Without a doubt, it is one of the most loved seasons of the year, and an excellent opportunity to dive into trends in swimwear fashion. From eco-friendly choices to bold prints and retro vibes, let's explore the top trends in swimwear this year. Here are tips for swimwear that will have you rocking in 2023!

Sustainable Swimwear

The Plunge Bikini From Summer Salt

The sustainable fashion movement has reached the shores of swimwear. As more people become conscious of their environmental footprint, eco-friendly fabrics and ethical production practices have become increasingly important. Brands are now offering swimsuits made from recycled materials such as plastic bottles, fishing nets, and other ocean waste. With sustainability at the forefront, these swimwear options are not only stylish but also eco-friendly.

High-Waisted Bottoms

Hot pants will continue to hit the swimsuit scene. They are sleek, sexy, and look good on any body type. An homage to the vintage styles of the 1950s, these pants offer an attractive silhouette and comfortable coverage. They come in a variety of cuts and colors, making it easy to locate the perfect pair to complement your favorite bikini top or a one-piece swimsuit.

Cut-Outs and Asymmetry

AGENT PROVOCATEUR Racy belted cutout two-tone swimsuit From Net-A-Porter

Swimwear in 2023 is all about making a statement, and cut-outs are leading the charge. Asymmetrical designs, one-shoulder styles, and strategically placed cut-outs create unique and eye-catching swimwear options. These styles are perfect for those who want to stand out from the crowd and showcase their fashion-forward sensibilities on the beach or by the pool.

Bold Prints and Patterns

Desert Sunrise Animal Print Bikini From Lilipretty

This season, swimwear is anything but boring. Bold prints and patterns are everywhere, from tropical motifs and geometric shapes to abstract designs and animal prints. These statement-making styles allow you to express your personality and make a splash, whether you're lounging by the pool or catching waves at the beach.

Textured Fabrics

Claire Terry Jacquard Bikini From FreePeople

Ribbed, smocked, and textured fabrics have become increasingly popular in swimwear fashion. These materials add depth and dimension to your beach ensemble, elevating the overall aesthetic. Textured swimwear is not only visually appealing but also provides a more comfortable and secure fit.

Long-Sleeve Swimsuits

Mixed Media Cutout Swimsuit From Eloquii

Long-sleeve swimsuits are making a comeback for both practical and fashionable reasons. These stylish suits offer added sun protection and are perfect for water sports enthusiasts, such as surfers and paddleboarders. With various prints, colors, and designs available, you don't have to sacrifice style for functionality.

Retro Revival

Malady Ring-Detailed Bandeau Bikini From Moda Operandi

The swimwear trends of 2023 are taking cues from the past. Vintage-inspired styles, including high-waisted bottoms, ruffles, and belted one-pieces, evoke a sense of nostalgia and timeless elegance. These classic designs will have you looking effortlessly chic on the beach or by the pool.

As the summer season approaches, it's the perfect time to update your swimwear wardrobe with the latest trends. Whether you opt for sustainable options, bold prints, or retro designs, there's a style to suit everyone's tastes. Embrace these fashionable trends and make a stylish splash in 2023.

GRAPHIC TEES, MEET YOUR MATCH: THE SUIT MAKING A STATEMENT

The sassy spirit of Y2K fashion has been all the rage from streetwear to swimwear. Within the latter, we’ve seen turn-of-the-century styles translate to superfluous adaptations of the low-rise sarong, the tropical&cheetah motif, and the board short from swimwear retailers high and low. Yet this same era of early 2000’s spunk birthed the niche trend of the midriff bearing graphic t-shirt, or baby tee. Often embellished with provocative, fierce, and at times overbearing aphorisms and slogans, the spirit of the graphic baby tee returns to shores in late summer of 2022, this time reborn as a skimpy and conversational swim suit. Surfing in the wake of Britney Spears’ iconic Dump Him baby tee, Anne Hathaway's witty Fed Up ringer, and Naomi Campbell’s infamous “Naomi Hit Me and I Loved it” comes the summer’s most outspoken slogan suit: The Holy Trinity Bikini.

Bearing “Father” and “Son” on sly sections of a triangle top and “Holy Spirit” on a cheeky tie bottom, what the internet has dubbed The Holy Trinity suit released earlier this year from Praying, a brand founded in 2020 known for its “cath-trad” take on streetwear popular among New York City subdistricts and London’s youth culture. Listed at $100 to Praying’s site, the bikini grew a semi-cult following specific to fans of campy countercultural styles. Yet earlier this month, TikTok star Addison Rae donned the classic black-on white lettering edition of the bikini in a campaign image for the Adidas x Praying collab sneaker — Supernova Cushion 7— to much internet controversy. As the image of Rae went viral for its bold and subversive phrasing, the backlash from denominational religious groups pressured her to delete the image from her profile without statements from either brand.

Are graphic bikinis pushing the boundaries?

Such a binaried reaction to a barely-there bikini raises the argument of fashion’s inherent function. Do our bodies say enough on their own? Is the vulnerability of wearing a swim suit such that we should censor our language? Let the garments speak for themselves?

Despite such challenges, the Holy Trinity suit refuses to be silenced, now available as a featured piece on the high fashion luxury retailer site SSENSE. After the viral success of the original colorway, more styles of the provocative bikini set dropped; now available in either nylon, terry cloth, or even bedazzled lettering. The suit has breached even the barriers of language, as the French version of the controversial set can be seen on Christina Aguilera from her July 27th Instagram post.

Perhaps due to the proliferation of religious iconography in the high fashion industry, such as the 2018 Met Gala (which bore the theme Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination), the Holy Trinity Bikini has been a hail mary for Instagram influencers and luxury wear icons alike. Faith and fashion find overlap in ceremonial garments— be it the pastor’s robes, rabbi’s yarmulke, or an imam’s turban— and references to these belief systems have bled into pop culture, media, and streetwear. Among Praying’s Catholic-bent aesthetic are contemporaries Marc Jacob’s Heaven, streetwear brand Fear of God, or even Tyler the Creator’s Jesus Freak capsule for Golf Le Fleur.

Agnostic nihilism, therefore, is nothing new to a god-fearing industry. What marks a new season for swimwear is the success of a swim suit with a message. Graphic swimwear presents the opportunity for the wearer to preach their beliefs, whatever they may be. Independent artists like Cowboys of Habit have followed suit with equally provocative bikinis that speak for themselves; a denim lycra look features “In My Villain Era” across the waistline is available on ap0cene.com.

DOPAMINE DRESSING: SKIP SUMMERTIME SADNESS WITH MARITIME MAXIMALISM

Suits by Fruity Booty & Collina Strada.

It is often said that an era can only find definition in retrospect. Yet the 2020’s are sure to go down in history as a period of instability; ecological, socio-political, and economic. Historically, responses to globalized suffering – be it warfare or fascism– reap ages of richly reactional art. In the current wake of international pandemic, governmental strife, and technological abstraction, artistic expression of the self requires a touch of optimism. Introducing: Dopamine Dressing.

What exactly is dopamine dressing?

Those who find fashion to be an industry of vanity forget that manner of dress constitutes a true science.

Between the garment and its wearer there forms a chemical reaction– dopamine dressing particularly  attributes style as a catalyst for joy, targeting this association between mind and clothed body to be one of psychological exuberance.

In other words: dressed correctly, you might just trigger a release of uplifting neurotransmitters.

Chobom wearing Chet Lo.

Fashion psychologist (yes, this is a real title) Dr. Dawnn Karen first dubbed the term “dopamine dressing” in her 2020 publication Dress Your Best Life, and its relevance has only grown–  as referenced in Alice Cary’s style spread for Vogue UK and Amy de Klerk’s article for Harper’s Bazaar

Yet the aesthetic of dopamine dressing has flooded the banks of fashion from street to swimwear. Embodied in Marc Jacobs’ whimsical youth line, Heaven; in London based House of Sunny’s cheery color-blocking; in Versace’s vibrant clashing prints; dopamine dressing invokes the theory of “enclothed cognition” to justify loud, elaborate style as a coping mechanism for a decaying world.

Featuring House of Sunny Lookbook & Versace La Vacanza Summer 22 Campaign.

And what does it look like in a swimsuit?

Just as happiness wears many faces, so too does dopamine dressing. Recognizable qualities include vivid palettes, saturated hues and eclectic layering. Fuschia, chartreuse, clementine, emerald, saffron. While color theory plays a definitive role in the psychological efficacy of dressing for dopamine– the brighter the better– it is perhaps the air of flamboyance and zing that distinguishes this style. Be it dissonant textures, playful patchworking, or psychedelic prints, the feel-good energy of dopamine dressing stems from the aura of the wearer.

Style Board features Collina Strada, Fruity Booty, Nanushka, House of Sunny, Gucci, Balenciaga, Chloé, Versace, La Perla, Kiko Kostadinov.

Moral of the story?

Dress to be happy. And don’t forget to make some waves.

HOT GIRL SUMMER KEEPS GETTING HOTTER... LITERALLY

Introducing Green Girl Summer

The season’s best from ecologically conscious retailers & designers.

As this summer reaches record breaking temps worldwide, the muse of hot girl summer must pass on the metaphorical baton to her more pragmatic twin: the goddess of green girl summer. (Hopefully to be later succeeded by fall, winter & spring).

Ecologically-conscious product drives high demand in a global market crippled by the financial repercussions of rampant overproduction and overconsumption. To provide the supply for this environmental consumer, one who desires durable and ethical product, come waves of emerging sustainable designers.

Shop like the hottest green girl of the summer in the latest beachwear and accessories of eco-fashion.

(The ocean will thank you for swimming responsibly.)

SUSTAINABLE SWIM STAPLES

Shop GIRLFRIEND COLLECTIVE for investment piece swimwear and actives in inclusive sizing from XXS-6XL! These classic silhouettes and basics, in regenerated nylon, encompass the slow fashion mentality, as their durable construction and timeless aesthetics will stay in style until the tides swallow Southern California— which, if we do not take to shopping green, could come sooner than we think.

TROPICAL GREEN SUITS

SWIMINISTA’S latest collab with CHRISTIAN LACROIX, a collection entitled “Enchanted Garden,” utilizes regenerated plastic water bottles— a post-consumer plastic — to repurpose into bikinis, one-piece suits, and coverups in floral motifs featuring figure flattering swim for busts A-DD. Founded by Andréa Bernholtz (founder also of Rock-N-Republic) & designed in Hawaii and Southern California, SWIMINISTA’s sustainable swimwear is both made in the USA and sourced from Italian regenerated textiles that “help to prevent about 250,000 plastic bottles per hour from reaching landfills and oceans” (PR Newswire).

BEACH BAGS, TOWELS, BUCKET HATS & WIDE-BRIMS

The original reusable shopping bag since 2007, BAGGU has become the name ubiquitous with contemporary fashion’s function, utility, and sustainability missions. Packable sun hats in organic cotton conserve space and water while bucket hats feature playful prints in the same eco-conscious fabric. Fruity towels of organic cotton terrycloth beg to be sprawled about a sandy shore. And of course, the go-to beach bag: the classic BAGGU tote in regenerated nylon. The online retailer’s sustainability segment asserts this regenerated nylon to be “made with 100% recycled material with recycled nylon filament yarn produced from pre-consumer waste”: wonderful for protecting your belongings from a fair share of salt, sea, or sand.

SLIDES & JELLIES

“The Real Jelly” since 1979, MELISSA’s recyclable long-use plastic footwear makes a sunny pairing with a beachside stroll… Or to hold up for hours tucked into the sand. Recent collaboration collection from MELISSA x SIMON MILLER debuts sculptural clogs in recycled plastic; MELISSA x MARINA LARROUDÉ features playful slides in the same circular material. Classic MELISSA flip flops and slip-on sandals innovate material science, utilizing “biobased EVA from sugar cane, a lightweight, sustainable raw material” (Melissa Shoes).

STATEMENT FOOTWEAR

Founded in Mallorca, Spain in 1975, Camper Labs harnesses a reputation for unique and well crafted footwear, often in ingenius and unseen materials. Bring the picnic poolside in gingham criss-cross slides made of recycled PET and recycled cotton. For a more tactical feel meet the “Oruga” sandal. Perhaps to scale a rocky climb, face a white-water rafting adventure, or trek to a nearby tide pool, this shoe features “TENCEL® Lyocell and recycled PET webbing with XL EXTRALIGHT® Organix™ outsoles (30% bio-based sugarcane).”

BEACH BLING

For some standout beach ready jewelry, look to New York city based designer Susan Alexandra. Known for her small batch, made-to-order, hand beaded earrings, necklaces, bags, and homegoods, these accessories support local sourcing and artisanship while screaming summer. Our favorites? Fruity earrings and all-over bead bags that must make it into the picture for your post-beach sunset cocktail.

LAST RESORT? SWIM IN YOUR UNDIES

Sometimes, we are in a pinch. The pool party falls right after work, and green girl summer does not condone driving the extra miles home to pick up a proper suit. Consider a two-for-one purchase perfect for the multipurpose shopper and the capsule wardrobe: Parade Underwear stakes its place in the undergarments school of big fish with a large influencer following. Famous for their sustainably sourced panties and bralettes in trendy cuts and patterns, Parade dresses the New York it-girls with size inclusive, comfortable, and cute styles clearly fit for the boudoir. Yet their Universal Seamless line — “made from certified recycled yarns, free of all harmful chemicals, featuring a certified organic cotton lining”— translates easy to a simple swimwear serve. STAYING STRAPPED:

SULTRY SARONGS, SCARVES,

& G STRINGS SET THE BAR FOR SUMMER SWIM

Sun’s out, guns out, buns out. View the latest seaside swim alongside recent STRAPPY, SKIMPY, and SILKEN from MONSE, FRANKIES BIKINIS & GUSH.

Photos Lily Moskowitz @1i1ymoskowitz. Models Ralyssah @rbandzztm & Gio @lovergirlgio ; J Wills @th3lov3club & Lily Moskowitz @1i1ymoskowitz ; Hannah Richtman @hannah.richtman @thebreak in G-STRING from @getgush.

“Will you help me— I have no idea what to do with all of this extra string!”

At least three times so far I’ve heard something similar this summer, two of which ended in an attempt to form some slipknot bow situation that seemed half intentional. Or at least wearable…

Making it crystal-coast-clear that swim wear has sacrificed FUNCTION for AESTHETIC. Performance appears to no longer serve the primary purpose of the bathing suit as a product. In the age of the influencer, perhaps more favorable for the swim wear designer is to keep in mind those who suit up not to swim, but to sit pretty on the sand and take the sun. And, of course, to take pictures while they’re at it.

New swim silhouettes debut in criss-cross halters and wrap-around ties on the beaches of the East Coast in Queens, New York. Beachgoers and best friends alike sport waist baubles and belly beads, while others don jeweled sunglass chains as a matching embellishment. Straps meet strings; founder of luxury resale retailer THE BREAK reveals new ecologically conscious swim wear line, consisting of the only piece you’ll need all summer. Called GUSH, this v-line thong was designed by HANNAH RICHTMAN to sit flesh on bod without wrinkling or ruching (Slides 3-4). Fittingly styled with cowboy boots, the G-String finds its fraternal twin in this underwear fit for outerwear. After two years indoors, it seems the world is out to show some skin.

Whether or Not The Suit Stays On for a Dip in the Waves?

Worries solved with the season’s staple: THE SCARF.

Tied around the waist as a sarong-style skirt, spread upon the shore as the classy woman’s picnic blanket, or wrapped around the head (a reference not only to the religious garment of the hijab, but to Westernized reinterpretations of the headscarf, including QUEEN ELIZABETH & the silks of the Anglican monarchy; the ever iconic Hollywood styles of ELIZABETH TAYLOR & AUDREY HEPBURN as later referenced for DIOR FW’21; early 19th century works by PAUL POIRET; even silent film actress ANNA MAY WONG’s distinct taste in Chinese silks and millinery), the scarf appears to be universally revived by fashion’s it girls as

the final word in sustainability, minimalism and multipurpose wear as a dual-use garment.

Photographer HERB RITTS in 1987 image of BRIGITTE NIELSON (Slide 11) mimics the motif of our summer style spread in his portrayal of a woman bare in the sun, tangled in fishing net, strung and salted..

Yet sultry as ever.
